English Department @ SAJS
At St Andrew’s Junior School, the English Department is committed to nurturing passionate, confident, and capable users of the English language. Language is at the heart of how we connect with others, explore ideas, and express who we are. We believe that when children develop strong literacy skills, they gain not only academic tools, but also the voice to shape their world.
Our Vision
Every Saint, an active listener, eloquent speaker, critical reader and skilled writer.
Our Mission
To inspire the love for language through rich learning environments, creative activities and positive role models.
Our English curriculum is anchored in STELLAR 2.0—Strategies for English Language Learning and Reading—a national framework that builds strong language and reading foundations through carefully chosen texts and scaffolded strategies. Alongside this, our approach is guided by three core principles: promoting multiliteracies, cultivating metacognition, and encouraging inquiry through dialogue. These principles equip our students to navigate a world of diverse texts, think deeply about their learning, and communicate meaningfully with others.
We aim to develop every Saint into an empathetic communicator, discerning reader, and creative inquirer—our three desired outcomes for English Language learners. These traits are cultivated not just through lessons, but also through rich, school-wide experiences that bring language to life.
Signature Programmes
English Week
This week-long celebration of English is packed with fun and engaging activities, from poetry recitations and storytelling sessions to language games and book buzzes. Through these, students experience the joy of language beyond the classroom and discover the power of words in new and exciting ways.Character Day
A highlight for many, Character Day invites students to dress up as their favourite book characters and participate in literature-themed activities. This day encourages imaginative thinking, sparks conversations about books, and promotes a culture of wide and enthusiastic reading.Plain English Speaking Competition
Focused on clarity and confidence, this competition challenges students to present their ideas in a way that is authentic and impactful. It gives them a platform to practise public speaking and develop into thoughtful, articulate communicators.
Through our curriculum and programmes, the English Department remains steadfast in creating a language-rich environment where Saints can explore, inquire, and grow. With every story read, discussion held, and idea written down, we empower our boys to become lifelong learners and confident speakers ready for the world beyond school.
